ARCTIC HARE

The arctic hare is a mammal. It weighs 12 pounds and is 21 inches long. Also the arctic hare  has very short ears. Its thick white fur blends in with the snow to hide from predators. The habitat of the Arctic hare is in treeless areas, north of the treeline in the tundra. They live in areas without deep snow cover. willows, shrubs, flowering plants and grasses are  needed. They like drier areas, not wet meadows on the tundra.

The arctic hare is a herbivore. It eats plants. It will eat grasses, berries, buds, woody plants, mosses, leaves and in the winter, roots and bark. The arctic hare's favorite food is willow leaves and bark. It doesn't hunt anything, but it is hunted by wolves, arctic foxes and snowy owls. It protects itself  by hopping very fast and running away from predators.

200 arctic hares live together in a burrow. Can you imagine how crowded it might be? So the burrow  must be very large inside. The arctic hare lives in the arctic tundra.
